BE PREPARED BEFORE YOU GO TO THE HOSPITAL
Hospitals generally do not provide timely medications for patients with Parkinson’s, resulting too frequently in a cascade of symptoms. This is a national problem.
Thankfully, Berkshire Health Systems, which operates hospitals in Berkshire County, has agreed to meet this essential need for patients with Parkinson’s.
In order to successfully assure that your Parkinson’s medications will be well managed during a Berkshire Health Systems’ hospitalization:
Bring to the Hospital:
A detailed list of your medications, including doses and specific administration times.
Your medications in their original bottles.
Upon Arrival at the Hospital:
Inform staff immediately that you have Parkinson's and require medication at specific times.
Self-Administration: You may take your own medication in the Emergency Department before admission, but you must inform the staff first.
Medication Verification: If your medication isn't on the hospital's list, staff will send your original bottle to the pharmacy for verification and re-labeling.
Confirm Your Schedule: Ensure the hospital pharmacy creates a personalized schedule for your medication to be given on time (within a 15-minute window).
Escalate Issues: If you encounter problems with the medication protocol, ask for Chief Nursing Executive, Brenda Cadorette, to be notified at 413 395 7875. She has been extremely helpful to our group.
