ABOUT US
The Berkshire Parkinson’s Support Group is a voluntary association of people with Parkinson’s and their Care Partners who support one another in confronting the many challenges of Parkinson’s disease. Together we promote the sharing of knowledge for treating and slowing the progression of this disease’s symptoms, the strengthening of a sense of community for those who often feel alone, and the improved well-being that arises from greeting each day with a sense of acceptance, forgiveness and gratitude. Founded in 2020 in collaboration with the Monterey Massachusetts Council on Aging, the Berkshire Parkinson’s Support Group has become a vital source of connection, learning, and mutual support for people in the Berkshires living with Parkinson’s disease and those who care for them. What began as a small, local effort has steadily grown into a trusted community serving over 50 individuals with Parkinson’s and more than 40 caregivers from across the region. (April 2026)
The group meets the first Thursday of each month from 2 - 4 pm in the Monterey Library at 452 Main St. Each gathering opens with a presentation focused on topics that are often difficult to access locally, including new medications, strategies for managing complex treatment regimens, movement practices such as Parkinson’s-specific exercise, yoga and music, and insights from physicians and elder-care professionals. Speakers have also included hospice providers and an estate planning attorney, reflecting the group’s holistic approach to living well with Parkinson’s. In the second hour, participants divide into two facilitated support groups—one for people with Parkinson’s and one for care partners—creating safe, affirming spaces where experiences can be shared openly. Through this structure, the Group has fostered friendships, reduced isolation, and strengthened a sense of belonging for participants and their families. Guided by a five-person leadership team and supported administratively by the Monterey Council on Aging, the group demonstrates how thoughtful, community-based support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those navigating chronic illness.
